ABOUT MEEA
The Midwest Environmental Enforcement Association is one of four associations based geographically across the United States and Canada. Although the four associations are distinctive in their composition, they are dedicated to the same goals and objectives, resulting in a national environmental network.
The Association was formed in 1982 in response to the need for greater cooperation among regulators, attorneys and investigators for more effective environmental enforcement. It was created by the Midwest states to support the effective enforcement of environmental statutes at the state and local level, with an emphasis on criminal and civil enforcement. Agencies from ten Midwestern states and the province of Ontario currently comprise the Association's membership. Member state agencies include attorney general offices, environmental protection agencies and enforcement agencies including departments of natural resources and state police.
MEEA is the only organization in the Midwest, which brings together environmental regulators, civil attorneys, law enforcement officers and prosecutors with the goal of developing fully integrated, multi-disciplined environmental enforcement programs. The Association promotes an interdisciplinary approach to environmental enforcement and therefore actively seeks participation from legal, technical and law enforcement officials in member states. MEEA encourages the involvement of state, local, and federal governments, recognizing the important role each plays in the enforcement process.
The Association provides many valuable services to its membership, including discipline-specific training, general information conferences, a national website, timely environmental updates and professional networking opportunities. Its resources are designed to promote environmental enforcement through interstate and interagency cooperation.
Since 1988, MEEA has trained over 9,000 enforcement personnel in specialized methods and techniques of administrative, civil and criminal environmental enforcement.
MEEA is a not-for-profit alliance of regulatory, law enforcement and legal agencies. Its funding is provided by a U.S. EPA grant and share matching contributions from its member agencies, as well as, additional contributions from agency members and supporters.
